I’ve been in Alabama

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

redneck_20limo

Let me start of by saying I could have taken this picture in Florida. But I didn’t. I was in Alabama. Folks – we’re not helping our stereotype here in the south.

In the meantime I was working with a cool client who is delivering BI  as part of their application. I had found Birmingham to be a cool city with some really neat parts. Mostly the really nice lobby of the Hilton I stay in and the rental car facilitiesSmile.   I know some of you have wondered why I’m behind on posting comments and have only done one blog post this week but I’ve been booked up with clients since we’re so busy! Smile

Keep up the good work and I’ll see you out there. Hit me up on twitter at @Adam_Jorgensen.

SQL Rally Voting

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Hey Everyone – SQL Rally Voting opens today for the BI Track. There are lots of good sessions and at the risk of being self promotional I thought I would share that my Summit spotlight Zero to Cube session was top five in it’s track and the 23rd session overall at the summit. IT is a LOT of fun and the way I present it is like NOTHING you’ve ever seen!.  We’ll have some real fun. Here are some real comment from folks who attended my session at the Summit:

“Best Session at the Summit So Far” (Second Day)

“Most I’ve learned in a single session”

“Did not know Analysis Services was this cool”

“Wow he is ruggedly good looking” – Yes Brian Knight said this one Smile..

The session and I received over 200 comments and the overal rating was over 4.85 (the first place session was rated 4.92). I know it’s like the Olympics :)

Most importantly please vote!! AND Register!!!! Until then – See you out there!

Invest in Yourself

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Hey folks. I think we can all agree that there is some really quality traimasculinening available for free on the web for SQL Server. Many of you take advantage of this but I still get to many clients who have no idea what is out there. This includes even such staples as who Paul Randal is or that youtube has  over 5000 videos tagged SQL Server. image

So there are tons of sites to go get information to invest in yourself. I think this guy would agree you’re long over due. There are also SQL Saturday’s nd other regional events like your  local User Group. I get so excited to see folks experience their first SQL Saturday or PASS Summit. But don’t think you have to read a 2000 pages book to get better at SQL Server. Just throw a dart at the internet and you’re likely to hit pay dirt.

If you don’t know how to use a search engine, here are some site you should check out:

http://mssqltips.com/

http://bidn.com/

http://www.sqlmag.com/

http://www.sql-server-performance.com/index.aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/default

http://www.sqlservercentral.com/

The other biggest place to learn from is blogs written by folks like me. I have a pretty extensive list of blogs I read often. You can download the .OMPL file and import it into any blog reader (although I would recommend Google reader).

http://tinyurl.com/AdamsSQLBlogs

Hang in there and I’ll see you out there! Don’t forget to hit me up at @adam_jorgensen.

Now that everyone else said it – I’m an MVP!

Friday, January 28th, 2011

MVP_FullColor_ForScreenThey say to save the best for last and while I’m not so sure about that I was truly honored to be awarded as a SQL Server MVP from Microsoft for 2011. I know many in the community who are deserving and did not get this honor and all I can do is remind you that you’re not doing it to get a blue square, you’re doing it because you want to do the things you do for the community.  I’m very excited about the opportunities this will give me for more access and exciting Non-NDA things to share with what community.  Thank you all for your kind words and emails over the holidays when they were announced.

I now I’ve been on a sabbatical and most of you know me by which city I’m in during a particular week but I’m REALLY planning on getting off the road when my current schedule begins to free up in March. I will be doing some SQL Saturday events but trying to concentrate on doing more frequent online events like SQLLunch (Woohoo) and our Pragmatic Works Free Trainings, Virtual chapter presentations and SO MNY MORE! So keep your eyes peeled here. I know it’s been quiet. I’m sorry but I truly needed a break. Thank you for your patience and for the emails asking where I was! Are you stalking me? Don’t … Please don’t.. I mean please stalk me Smile.

I promise I have some cool things coming up. Catch me here or at @adam_jorgensen.

Pragmatically Thankful

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

This season, as we continue to grow and partner with some of the best of the best in the industry. I find myself very thankful. We have been blessed to hire many that were under or unemployed and are now kicking butt in the BI, SharePoint and SQL Server world. I have been both under an unemployed at times in my life and I realize it’s the little things that make our team the best.

So this season I thought  I would share some of the reasons I’m not only thankful for our growth and success at Pragmatic Works, but also for the growth and success of my peers here and abroad. So in no particular order, here are some great holiday reasons why I love this company and it’s people.

Reason #1- Strong commitment to employee development and advancement

We have programs in place to drive growth and mentoring for all our employees. This targets areas for immediate improvement, then focuses on longer term goals to increase their confidence, presence and technical capabilities. We focus on the whole individual, not just technology to help make sure our team is the most well-rounded, technically skilled team in the business. This ties directly to our internal advancement policies, putting the consultants goals in their hands.

Reason #2 – Demonstrated commitment to diversity

We strongly believe that to have the best team, you must get the best people. That means we look for the best fit for our culture, project needs and company growth no matter what gender, background, orientation or taste in color they may have.

Reason #3 – Creative Personalities

Many of you know some of our Pragmatic characters. We’ve even got a SQL Chicken, former armed forces members, marketing executives, dungeon masters, metal rockers, professional dart champs, and others. We encourage our folks to express their individuality in the community, in the office and to help our clients see value in their data.

clip_image006

Reason #4 – Organized Executives

Our executives and management team come from the technical trenches. We know that organization is important, but agility is it’s best friend. I’m proud of the team we have to reason not only technical but business model solutions because of their experience and depth.

clip_image008

Reason #5 – We are Committed to a safe workplace

We have a great time, but do our best to ensure that everyone is healthy, happy and wise. We even have fitness programs in our building that employees are encouraged to participate in! I should get on that myself Smile.

clip_image010

Reason #6 – Awesome Travel Policy and Combat Bonuses

Many consulting firms place travel expenses on the consultants and provide reimbursement. We do not! We work very hard to ensure that we book all travel corporately, provide flexibility to our team and reward them and their families in special ways when travel is unforeseen is more extensive than planned.

abaff872-e382-488b-a97d-68aed44f6cbf

Reason #7 – Helpful Peers always willing to lend a hand

Jut this week I saw several questions from folks in the field and other teammates jumped right in and began helping to get to the bottom of it. I was SO proud. This is a critical part of our culture and I love seeing it in action. I don’t know if anyone’s hands got washed, but their brains got some extra bling from the effortSmile.

be2ee1d3-74de-4959-8c3d-bcf17b3cf0e3

Reason #8 – We lift each other up

Sometimes projects and people don’t go together perfectly. Some days it’s the project, some days it’s the people. Either way, we are a team. Teams make sure to help each other through challenges in technology, process, heavy desk moving, or how to improve the prank idea that they can’t get off the ground.

clip_image016

Reason #9 – We stay up on the latest technology

Our partnerships and work with Microsoft, HP, Fusion IO and others, keeps us on the cutting edge of prototyping and delivering new technology. This is a lot of fun and reward for those who make it to our Sr. ranks as they deliver a lot of these types of engagements and get to play with some COOL toys. Check the newest BI appliance we’re working with here Smile.

Reason #10 – We pride ourselves on teamwork and communication

When I saw this In the fridge I was so proud that we’re able to be honest with each other. Immediate and constructive feedback is so important in our business to improve client relationships, reduce technical errors and reworks and improve professional development. Keep it coming. I won’t leave my salad dressing in the fridge anymore! Smile

Reason #11 – The best client benefits

We really take care of our clients. By working with us, they get top notch access to vendors, best practice guidance and a wealth of information on how best to manage their environments and data services organizations.  We often consult not only on technical challenges, but also on ways to improve cost efficiency, performance per dollar and decrease project cost and increase deliverables. Those are some pretty good benefits.

And of course….. Bacon…

Obligatory for any decent SQL Server team. Yes it’s USB powered Smile.

So yes, I’m quite thankful for many things this holiday season. Most of all my family, loved ones, friends, peers, clients, the community and all of you. God Bless you this holiday season! Let us know what you’re thankful for.  Ladybird and I wish you a terrific upcoming 2011.

We talked to many of you at SQL Saturdays, the PASS Summit and other events and many of you have the same questions. So I’ve decided to answer them ahead of time for you!

3. Do I need to live in Jacksonville to work for you? Our strength as an organization is in our ability to work together, mentor each other daily. While this best takes place in our new state of the art office facility, we are sensitive to family and economic factors that limit options. Our goal is to have folks dedicated to what they do no matter where they live. Travel to the office may be required for some roles or projects.

4. Will I be on the road all the time? – One of the best things about working with our team is the variety of industries, and experiences we have to leverage for our clients and consultant growth. The only way to do that is to go out in the world and experience them.  Our goal is to provide a balanced approach to travel and many of our clients are flexible and do not require fulltime on site presence. Typically the travel requirement does not go above 50% weekday travel for an extended period of time. We couple that with Combat Pay style bonuses and goodies to help make the process enjoyable.

Motivational Monday

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Hey Folks, Welcome to another edition of Motivational Monday. Today’s entry is sponsored by vets everywhere. I’m sure they know better than to sleep in the bunked just off the 8th green at the hotel for dogs.

Have you ever heard the saying – “Don’t pee on my head and tell me it’s raining”?

129056614717469910

The important part of that saying is not that is gross, but that we remember to always shoot straight when communicating. Some key tips when communicating (and some pet peeves of mine) are:

1. Make sure your discussion has some context if the person you’re speaking to was not there originally.

2. Clearly state the situation, the problem and possible solutions. If you’re missing any of those three the conversation is unproductive.

3. Follow up on important communication with an email. Notice I said FOLLOW UP! Nothing irks me more than important or time sensitive communication sent via email. Pick up the phone people!

4. Make sure to tailor the communication to the audience. You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. Newsflash – your probably notSmile. For some reason people are listening so reward them with a description at their level.

So get out there and keep up the good work! Make sure the folks you are talking to don’t need an umbrella.

Until then – SELECT ‘Stay classy ’ + @YourCityWhereverYouAre +’.’
